A new advertising campaign inspired by the website You Tube has been launched in Scotland to warn youngsters about the dangers of binge drinking. Research among youngsters in Falkirk and Stirling reveals excessive levels of drinking among 13-15 year olds.
Timed to run until the close of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, the campaign will take the form of posters on buses across the Forth Valley displaying the slogan "You Tube! Don't be Next".
You Tube has faced criticism for showing footage of young people indulging in too much alcohol, and as a result the adverts for the campaign are based on the site.
In anticipation of incidents that may occur during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, the adverts will publish local telephone numbers for advice about alcohol-related problems.
The advertising campaign - timed to coincide with start of Scotland's first Alcohol Awareness Week (21st October to 27th October) - will continue past New Year’s Eve into early 2008.
NHS Forth Valley chief executive, Fiona Mackenzie, who chairs the substance action team said: "The long-term effects of excessive alcohol can be dangerous to health. We need to encourage people to drink sensibly and be aware of what damage too much alcohol can cause."
