White Christmas for carrot growers
18/09/2006

White carrots are set to become a "best-selling vegetable" in the run-up to Christmas, according to Paul Lei, a carrot-buyer for Asda.

Marketed as Satin White, the new Yorkshire-grown vegetable could become a Christmas dinner favourite, in addition to being served at Christmas parties.

Asda, which will have the white carrot in stock, predict the vegetable to sell well, Mr Lei indicates.

The Satin White will be sold alongside regular orange carrots, potatoes and Brussel sprouts – other traditional Christmas dinner vegetables.

Mr Lei said: "This is the greatest change to occur to the carrot for over 400 years.

"We believe that Satin White is set to become one of our best-selling vegetables in the run-up to Christmas."

Grown using natural methods, the carrot is said to be sweeter and have more naturally occurring phytochemical compounds, according to those who have produced it.

Asda has announced this week that Ashes England captain Andrew Flintoff will be used to promote its George range of clothes.

The complete Xmas George Collection, which could provide an outfit for those going to Christmas parties this festive season, will be available in Asda from late October.
