Underground London cocktail party to mark end of drinking
16/05/2008

An unofficial cocktail party is being planned for the evening of 31st May, the day before Boris Johnson’s ban on drinking on London public transport comes into effect.

A website called Last Orders on the Underground has been set up to publicise the event, which kicked off as three independent groups on Facebook.

Hundreds of revelers are planning to descend down into the Circle line, Liverpool Street Station at 9pm on the 31st, a Saturday night. However, as the cat is now out of the bag, no-one is quite sure whether the event is even legal or whether the capital’s transport police will shut it down before it starts.

The website states: ‘On June the 1st 2008 - drinking on London public transport will be made illegal. We will be raising a glass to the end of this British tradition with a good old knees up. Horah.’

However, attendees are being urged to behave responsibly and behave in a proper manner as befitting upstanding London citizens. One of the organisers, James Darling, a twenty year-old web designer, says that it will be a ‘gentrified affair’ and that participants are being urged to ‘dress up’. The event is not being held as a protest but as a simple ‘last chance’ gesture.
