UK consumers 'have taxing new year'
19/12/2006

Last New Year's Eve, there were 3,054 people who filed their tax-assessment forms online, new research reveals.

A further 1,776 individuals used the internet to file their returns on New Year's Day, according to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Overall, HMRC suggests that more than 6,000 tax forms were returned throughout the four-day festive period – many of which would have been completed before people went out to celebrate the turn of the year.

"We always recommend that people file their tax returns early, avoiding the busiest periods, and we are pleased to see taxpayers following our advice, even at Christmas and the new year," said Mike Shipp, HMRC's director of self assessment.

"Filing online is an easy, convenient and secure way to submit your tax return."

HMRC is opening a helpline over the festive week, which will allow those needing help with their tax self-assessment forms the opportunity to talk to an expert.

The helpline is open on New Year's Eve 2006 from 08:00 to 16:00 GMT, but is closed on New Year's Day 2007.

Tax self-assessment forms apply to company directors, the self-employed, those with business partners and higher-rate taxpayers.
