Spending more time with family, friends tops New Year’s resolutions
17/08/2007

Every year thousands of people make New Year’s resolutions that they are determined to see through and accomplish in the coming year. Only about 10% of people actually make the changes that they want.

Here are the top 10 New Year’s resolutions that might inspire you to make changes now or in 2008.

Number 10 – Organise my life
From cleaning up the clutter in your home or office to ensuring you have the right stapler and stationery resources some people feel that they need to get organised as a New Year’s resolution. Don’t expect to wake up after your New Year’s Eve party refreshed and organised. It takes planning and work to clear clutter and create systems that work for you. Write a list of what you want to organise and then do some research on the best ways to implement a system. Dedicate enough time to get the job (if it’s cleaning out a closet or room) done successfully and get others to help you. The key is to stay organised and clear of clutter throughout the year by regularly reviewing your systems.

Number 9 – Education
Some people’s New Year’s resolutions include learning something new and more stimulating. From computer maintenance to a new language or skill getting some education is one of the easier New Year’s resolutions to be successful at. Have a goal that you want to achieve and put it somewhere where you can focus on it. Education expands the mind and your life.

Number 8 – Give more of yourself
Volunteering to help others is a common New Year’s resolution. Many people feel the need to give some of their time to help out at a charity, local library or to mentor someone else. This is a popular and unselfish New Year’s resolution.

Number 7 – Becoming debt free
Getting the finances in order is the number seven New Year’s resolution. From reducing debt to developing a savings scheme many people want to spend the New Year with less financial stress.

Number 6 – Stop drinking alcohol
After a huge New Year’s Eve party with copious amounts of alcohol and a thrashing hangover the next day many people resolve to quit drinking or reduce their alcohol consumption over the coming year. The key to this New Year’s resolution is not to go cold turkey. Stop drinking slowly with moderation as the goal. If you think that your alcohol consumption is a big problem get in contact with a support service who can offer helpful advice for quitting.

Number 5 – Live life to the full
Sitting at half way is the New Year’s resolution to live a better, more enjoyable life. The twenty-first century has brought many technological improvements but more people are more stressed more of the time and this is leading to unhealthy lifestyles. Learn some stress reduction techniques, take a deep breath and enjoy your time for a happier year.

Number 4 – Stop smoking
A life with clean and clear lungs is a life that may be longer lived. Many people who smoke vow to stop smoking after their New Year’s Eve parties are finished. As with reducing your alcohol intake if you wish to stop smoking do it in a smart way. Look for products that will help you to stop smoking quickly yet efficiently.

Number 3 – Losing weight
Some studies put the number of people overweight in Briton as high as 75%. Losing weight has become one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions, especially after the over indulgence from Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties. The key to a successful weight reduction is to have a healthy goal weight in mind and focus on that goal. Research healthy ways to lose weight (healthy eating and exercise) and bring in support from others to help you achieve your goal.

Number 2 – Regular exercise
Linked to New Year’s resolution number three is to develop a regular exercise plan. Exercise, along with a balanced diet, is the only way to keep fit, strong and healthy throughout the year. Exercise can reduce you risk of illness, cancers, reduce depression and blood pressure and help you to lose weight. Find the right exercise for you and you have a higher chance of sticking with it. Or try an eco-friendly way to exercise by joining a green gym.

Number 1 – Family and friends
The number one New Year’s resolution is to spend more quality time with friends and family throughout the coming year. This is the most important New Year’s resolution for many people and one of the easiest to achieve. Make plans to see friends and family every week for nourishing interactions and connections that humans need to feel good.
