Christmas party shoppers may have a hard time getting their hands on a bottle of bubbly this Christmas party and holiday season. Specialty bottle stores are reporting a shortage of champagne as the party season kicks off.
Customers who hope to serve bottles of champagne for New Year’s or a Christmas party may have to put their name on a waiting list. Consumers who want to purchase magnums and jeroboams of champagne are already on a lengthy waiting list at prestigious wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd.
The shortage is due to a huge demand and lack of production. Katharine Hibbert writes in City AM: “The problem has been compounded because the larger bottles are only made in one factory.”
Berry Bros & Rudd champagne buyer Simon Field said “Getting hold of cheap fizz from supermarkets won’t be a problem but if you want the best you should think ahead to secure the bottles you really want.”
The global sale of champagne rose from 287 million regular-sized bottles in 2002 to 321 million in 2006.
