The traditional Christmas party season should be the time retail sales peak, according to Heather Hopkins, the research vice president for internet trend tracker Hitwise UK.
The second and third weeks of December are predicted to be the busiest time of the festive period, Ms Hopkins told Reuters.
Many people will be looking online to purchase gifts in time for their annual office Christmas party.
"We project that the share of visits to retailers will increase by eight per cent over last year, an even stronger rate of growth than experienced in the busy 2005 season," Ms Hopkins said.
"This growth is driven by confidence in online shopping, on-time delivery, ubiquitous use of search engines and referrals from social networks."
Ms Hopkins added that these trends show that consumers are confident that online retailers will deliver the gifts they require in time for Christmas.
Earlier this month Marks & Spencer chief executive Stuart Rose said that he did not think online shopping will replace high-street shopping.
