Office partygoers are being warned to be wise under the mistletoe during the forthcoming festive period.
In order to protect from potential claims of sexual harassment, employers should draw out "love contracts" and ensure their relationships with employees are defined in writing prior to the party season, according to law firm John Collins and Partners LLP.
The Western Mail reports that almost 25 per cent of employees have been involved in a work relationship sometime in their career and warns workers to prepare for their partnership ending.
"I work in an office of around 160 people - there are 30 in my department," Kirsty Williams, who works at a BT call centre in Swansea, told the publication.
"At every Christmas party there are always some people who get together under the mistletoe. Some of these relationships last, some do not, and it can lead to an awkward atmosphere when office romances fall apart."
She added that the event can result in individuals leaving the company or moving departments.
Employers must also take extra responsibility for their staff at festive parties, according to a recent report from the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.
