However, Halloween is also fast becoming one of the most prominent party nights on the calendar, gaining popularity among college students in the US, the website reports.
Halloween's position in October means that its starts a two-month period of parties, including Guy Fawkes Night, Christmas and New Year's Eve.
The celebration of all things ghoulish could get people in the mood for the other parties ahead, with the National Retail Federation indicating that 63 per cent of those planning to mark the occasion have shown a desire to dress up.
US celebrities Paris Hilton and Carmen Electra have both recently hinted that they are looking for a date this New Year's Eve, the New York Post reports.
