A beach in New Zealand (NZ) is planning a booze-free New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in order to avoid accidents, it has emerged.
Waimarama Surf Life Saving Club is supporting Hastings Police in approving a liquor ban, which could mean no alcohol on Waimarama Beach for 30 hours, Hawke's Bay Today reports.
A community service committee meets today and will discuss, among other issues, the option of banning alcohol - a traditional New Year's Eve tipple - from 18:00 local time on December 31st to midnight on January 1st.
According to volunteers at the surf life saving club, helping individuals in distress during the new year celebrations is commonplace and they have written to the police to indicate their concerns.
In the letter, they wrote that intoxicated people by the sea are a New Year's Eve risk and the broken glass left behind is a risk thereafter.
