A Kirkcaldy Central councillor is taking steps to make sure people save money in the run up to the Christmas party and the holiday season. Judy Hamilton plans to inform Kirkcaldy residents about ‘Save Xmas’, a campaign launched by the Office of Fair Trading.
This comes after several families were duped into wasting thousands of pounds in savings through the Farepak hamper saving scheme. Three generations of one family lost their savings in the scheme.
Hamilton said: “I saw directly the misery this caused among many local families, and I just felt I wanted to do something to prevent it happening again.” She has written to the OFT asking for ten tool kits which gives information and advice concerning how to save money safely during the Christmas party and holiday season.
Hamilton plans to educate others about the new option through her regular councillor’s surgeries and by giving tool kits to other councillors before the Christmas party and holiday season. She hopes other councillors will work to make sure citizens in their areas get the correct advice in the months before the Christmas party and gift giving month of December.
The campaign Save Xmas was started in Scotland in late July and then moved on to other parts of the UK.
