The cities of Germany enjoy a great festive reputation for their Christmas markets, but this year it’s New Year’s Eve that’s the centre of attention. The Tollwood Performing Arts Festival is hosting a big celebration in Munich.
The New Year’s Eve party takes place in the Alpen tent on the Theresienwiese and ticket holders will be able to enjoy an aperitif on entrance, a five-course meal and another bite to eat on the stroke of midnight.
The Tollwood Festivals, which run throughout December, have always received high praise in previous years both from visitors and the press for their innovation and creativity. For New Year's Eve 2007, the organisers have lined up a performance of a famous Bavarian comical play and a live swing band to accompany the German tradition of waltzing at midnight.
From humble beginnings in 1988, the unconventional Tollwood cultural festival now draws a million visitors each year to its festival tents on the Theresienwiese. With a focus on cabaret, circus and variety, it is known for its quality and originality. The New Year’s Eve party is the culmination of the annual festival.
British revellers can of course celebrate the New Year twice: with Germany being an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), Britons can toast the turn of the British New Year an hour after their German counterparts have opened the champagne.
