Trade union Usdaw is holding an early New Year's Eve party for MSPs in order to prove a point, it has emerged.
In support of Labour MSP Karen Whitefield's private bill, which proposes that big stores close on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, the union is staging a party to remind government workers what retail staff will be missing, reports Scottish & Universal Newspapers.
Usdaw's idea is that MSPs will see how much fun high-street workers could have if they did not have to work on January 1st.
The event takes place at Holyrood's committee room 6. All MSPs have been invited and the gathering will include folk music and a steak pie dinner for all attendees.
A number of MSPs have backed Usdaw's claims that January 1st should be kept as a day to celebrate the new year.
Usdaw general secretary John Hannett said: "We made a very strong submission to the committee that allowing big stores to open their doors on those days [Christmas Day and New Year's Day] would ruin the festive season for our members and would undermine the traditional Hogmanay family celebrations shop workers have enjoyed for generations."
