There will be extra “bobbies on the beat” across the country this Christmas and New Year’s Eve in a high profile campaign against drink and drug fuelled driving.
West Mercia Constabulary is one such force that will be sending out extra patrols over the festive period. The extra patrols will target drivers who get into their vehicles after drinking or taking drugs. The initiative is aimed at 17 - 35 year olds and also aims to combat drink spiking and alcohol fuelled violence.
A total of 222 people across the West Mercia force area were arrested over the festive season in 2006 after failing or refusing to give breath tests. A further 39 people were arrested for drug taking after failing roadside field impairment tests.
Casualty Reduction Manager for West Mercia Police, Sergeant John Roberts, said: "Taking drugs or drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel is totally deplorable and irresponsible behaviour that ruins hundreds of lives every year. The message is very simple - if you're going out drinking with friends this Christmas don't drive and if you are driving don't drink.
"Worryingly and despite many warnings over the years about the dangers of drink/drug driving, there are still far too many reckless drivers ignoring the devastating consequences. Take responsibility for your own actions and don't let a moment of madness ruin your Christmas or your life."
