Men 'more likely to celebrate new year'
29/11/2006

More men than women plan to celebrate at a New Year's Eve party, new research from Canada reveals.

Some 31 per cent of men and 25 per cent of women are planning to celebrate the beginning of 2007 with a party, according to a survey from Visa Canada.

Over-50s are more likely to host the main meal of the holiday season and the under-30s more regularly host their own new year party, the research indicates.

There is also a propensity for Canadian festive shoppers - much like their UK counterparts - to buy their gifts online, Visa Canada suggests.

"When we looked at the information this year, it was interesting to see a shift in provincial spending averages and more people turning to the internet," said Tania Freedman, director of corporate communications for Visa Canada.

Further findings from the study show that 60 per cent of Canadians will opt for an artificial Christmas tree, so guests at New Year's Eve parties will not encounter stray needles.

Back in the UK, licensing chiefs in Peterborough are calling on public establishments to ensure they have the correct licensing documents to hold festive parties.
