According to new research, London’s Southbank Centre hosts over 200 more live music events than the second most prolific music venue in the UK.
PRS for Music, which collects composer and songwriter royalties, found that the Southbank Centre, located close to London's West End and near Waterloo station, hosted 634 musical events in 2008.
Over 20 per cent of the top 20 music venues in terms of the number of performances, were found to be located in London. Other top venues are located in Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.
Jude Kelly, the artistic director for the Southbank Centre, welcomed the news that it had topped the chart for number of music events, stating, “We have a wonderful range of performance spaces, resident orchestras and ensembles, and a staff who all share a passion for a breadth of music and artists, from Messiaen to the Master Musicians of Jajouka”.
Acting CEO for PRS Music, Jeremy Fabinya, says that the results of the firm’s research shows that, “the British music scene is thriving.”
