Preparations are underway for the annual New Year’s Day Parade in London. Those living within earshot of the parade route can forget about sleeping off their hangovers from the previous night’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Described as the "greatest annual street parade in Europe" London's New Year's Day Parade passes by many familiar London landmarks, setting off from Big Ben at noon, and making its way past Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus, ending at Berkeley Street.
Marching bands and dancing troupes are set to entertain those London residents who have resurfaced following their New Year’s Eve parties.
Over 10,000 performers from 20 countries are due to take part in the parade.
More than half a million people are expected to gather in central London to see the Parade in all its glory as it weaves its way along the 2 mile route.
The first New Year’s Day Parade in London was in 1987, and it’s believed the annual event has raised nearly £700,000 for charity since then.
For the 21st anniversary 3 hours of live satellite coverage will be screened around the world. Major broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN, Fox news, SKY and CBS are all expected to cover the event.
