Jesus spoils Christmas parties
06/06/2008

When you're planning your Christmas parties this year, it's probable that the first thing on your mind won't be Jesus, and that a great deal of your guests won't be Christian at all.

But would you exclude them from the festivities on this basis?

Of course not – Christmas parties are for everyone. But that's not what one 9-year-old boy at a primary school in Banffshire was told.

Douglas Stewart, who attends Cluny Primary school, a council-run school, was banned from the school's annual Christmas celebrations because he stated that he didn't believe in Jesus.

Douglas had been taken out of Religious Education lessons by his parents because of the family's non-religious beliefs, and Cluny Primary headmaster Ian Davidson decreed that, because the boy had no interest in Christianity, he could not celebrate the birth of Christ.

Douglas' furious mother declared that her son was "heartbroken" at being excluded from the celebrations, and telephoned Moray Council to find out their policies on Christmas parties. She was informed that these were 'non-religious'.

As a result, the council spoke to the school, and subsequently the decision to exclude Douglas was put down to a "misunderstanding".

Douglas also found that Santa hadn't forgotten him, and received a present that had been left behind when he returned to school.
