Consumers are being urged to stay green this Christmas by recycling wrapping paper and offering second hand gifts.
In a message targeted at all of the UK's festive consumers, including Christmas partygoers, the Green Guide for Christmas suggests that people should avoid buying anything that cannot be recycled, reports Reuters.
Furthermore, handmade Christmas cards are actively encouraged by Friends of the Earth, which states that cards of this calibre should not be seen as "a cheap option".
The Green Guide also suggests that consumers should not plan to travel far during the festive period, as long car journeys cause more pollution.
"The advances in modern communications technology make it possible to see and hear your kith and kin via the internet, and investing in a simple webcam setup can bring you closer," says the Green Guide.
"It is certainly worth trying out, as the saving in CO2, time and energy are considerable."
According to Waste Online, some 83 sq km of wrapping paper will be thrown away this Christmas - an amount which could cover an area larger than Guernsey.
