People can enjoy the holiday season even if they do not have close family around them, it has been suggested.
Partying with your friends over the Christmas and new year period is one way to ensure that the end of the year is a happy time, the Associated Press (AP) reports.
Paul Siegel, an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the State University of New York/Purchase, told the AP: "Our closest friends are our chosen family."
With particular reference to people in cities, such as London, he added: "Connections ground us. So if you are unable to spend the holidays this year with family members, do whatever you can to create a sense of connectedness to others in your life."
One way of celebrating the start of a new year is to head to a New Year's Eve party - something that millions of people will be doing worldwide.
London will welcome in the new year with a parade from Green Park to Westminster – an event which is advertised for all of the family.
