The Herald is reporting 3000 British troops could be on the way home from Iraq in time for a family Christmas party. British families are celebrating the news but waiting for the official announcement from Gordon Brown. He is expected to make an announcement in his statement next month.
The UK currently has about 5000 troops based in Iraq. The Herald reports government sources as suggesting almost all soldiers could be withdrawn over the Christmas party and holiday season.
The withdrawal of troops over the Christmas party season depends on movements of armies from other countries. The US has begun a slight withdrawal of troops with US President George Bush asking for the removal of a small amount of military personnel.
Michael Settle with The Herald reports Des Browne, the Defence and Scotland Secretary told delegates at a Labour Party conference: “We are now moving into a further challenging phase. We will continue to strengthen their security forces, to help to improve their government to uphold their sovereignty.”
Christmas party hosts with a loved one serving in Iraq can expect to hear more about the withdrawal in the coming weeks.
