Royal Mail has agreed to waive charges for families sending packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Any parcel shipped to a soldier on duty can now be shipped for free until the end of the year. This is good news to UK family members who often send items so troops can have a Christmas party and celebrate while overseas.
The changes happened after the Daily Mail highlighted the expenses many families were spending to send Christmas party items and gifts to Iraq.
Managers with the Royal Mail did not commit to extending free shipping past the beginning of the year, saying the situation needed to be reviewed.
General Dannatt said yesterday he was ‘extremely grateful’ for the decision which would ‘mean a great deal to our soldiers and to their families.’
Under the current pricing scheme, if families want to send a 2kg parcel of Christmas party items and gifts, they must pay around 6.50 GBP. Some estimate Royal Mail will need to pay out 6 million GBP to allow free shipping for families sending packages overseas.
UK resident Teresa Theobald organised a petition to encourage the Royal Mail to deliver parcels to soldiers for free until Christmas. She says she is ‘delighted’ that she can send Christmas party items and gifts at no cost.
