Essex couple choose Abba-theme for wedding party

Following the runaway success of the film Mama Mia!, the Abba-themed movie of the hit West End show, more and more couples have been jetting off to Greece to celebrate their nuptials.

In an attempt to recreate the romance and fun of Mama Mia!, one Colchester couples, Sharon and Kevin Lawrence, held their Abba-themed wedding on the island of Skiathos.

Sharon says, “I went to see the film with my girlfriends last summer and as soon as I saw it, that was it, I wanted my wedding to be like that.” “I love Abba anyway and it’s such a magical film, it’s happy and upbeat and the setting is amazing.”

Wedding company, Ionian Weddings, organise themed weddings to people who love the film and want their own slice of Mama Mia!-style romance. The company’s founder, Jane Palikiras, says, “It gives people the opportunity to get married in the Mama Mia! location. If people see the film, they love the romance and the setting and they want that for their wedding.”

Although the company offers the full Mama Mia! package, including donkey rides and atmospheric hilltop chapels, Palikiras says that most couples are happy with the setting and some Abba hits being played at the wedding party.
