A young entrepreneur has created an online business out of his annual struggle during the Christmas party season to find presents for his diabetic family.
Seventeen year old Giles Peters’ website DiabeticHampers.co.uk sells tailor-made gift hampers packed with specially sourced diabetic food and drink.
Peters, who lives in Norwich, came up with the idea after struggling to buy presents for diabetic members of his family during the Christmas season. Mr Peters was frustrated with the lack of diabetic products on the market for the 2.1 million diabetics in the UK, and decided to create a business offering a solution.
He said: “When you go to the supermarket you have to go through all the labels and you find there is so much saturated sugar in products. I couldn't find anything suitable anywhere that was really healthy for diabetics. You really had to ask around.”
All the foods and drinks sourced by Peters must pass taste tests as well as satisfy strictly controlled sugar content and GI levels in order to make their way into the business's Christmas party hampers.
Peters said: “Most of the preparing was finding the right products. I've been hugely busy. I haven't had time for socialising but I actually enjoy it.”
The website offers six themed hampers to suit all occasions, including the Christmas festive season. Peters claims he has personally researched and sourced all the products during his numerous visits to food shows across the UK. His policy is to support small local suppliers of high quality products.
