High street retailers say England sports hit them hard this weekend. Retailers are wondering where the Christmas party and holiday shoppers are.
England’s football and rugby teams played last Saturday and served up a losing combination for the High Street. Retailers reported falling numbers of shoppers. There were 7% fewer shoppers compared with the same day last year, according to retail research group Footfall.
Footfall reports Christmas party and holiday shopper numbers on Saturday were also down 4.1% on the previous Saturday (October 6th).
For the weekend as a whole, Christmas party and holiday shopper numbers compared with both last year and the previous weekend were down by 4.8% and 3.3% respectively.
“These figures suggest that we are a patriotic nation when it comes to sport” said Footfall's Natasha Burton. “At this time of year, we would expect the number of shoppers to start gently increasing in the run-up to Christmas, but we have actually seen a drop.”
Burton noted it will be interesting to see how the England vs South Africa Rugby World Cup final on Saturday evening (October 20th) will affect Christmas party and holiday shopper behaviour over the coming week as the nation prepares, stocking up on themed merchandise and food and drink to accompany their viewing.
