Over 300 events will be organised as part of this year’s EAST Festival, which celebrates the diverse cultural powerhouse that is East London.
The festival runs from 5 March to 10 March 2009 and will include events celebrating art, film, music, literature, theatre, history and fashion in venues across areas such as Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Hackney and Stratford.
The Asian Britain programme is a major part of the festival and will involve six days of Asian music and art in Spitalfields Market, in collaboration with B4U, the leading Bollywood film and music channel.
Other events include walking and cycling tours of the area, art installations in the Barbican and in Spitalfields and theatre, gallery and museum events across the region.
London tourism organisation, Visit London, is a fan of the festival, according to interim CEO, Sally Chatterjee who says, “the growing popularity of the EAST Festival shows the importance of this part of London to our cultural offering. The sheer range and size of the events taking place means there is something for everyone and a huge number of them are free. There’s never been a better reason to get out and explore one of the most culturally rich and diverse parts of the city.”
