A total of 54 per cent of consumers are planning to find their Christmas shopping gifts online, according toYouGov.
Total spending online this festive period is expected to break all previous records, including the £5.4 billion spent over the internet last year, reports Mad.co.uk.
Many people will be looking online for ideas relating to their office Christmas party, including clothes, fancy dress items and festive goods.
Richard Webster, communications director at lifestyle data supplier DLG, argues that the last shopping day before Christmas online should be at least a fortnight before Christmas Eve, in order to ensure Christmas party shoppers receive their goods in good time.
"All advertising to drive traffic should be geared towards this time," says Mr Webster.
"In practice this means retailers should contact people several weeks in advance of that date to allow them to plan their shopping better."
Reports from the US also suggest that online shopping is set to increase, with holiday marketing campaigns starting this month.
