Some 42 per cent of UK consumers believe that they will spend more money over the Christmas party period than they have done since August, new research reveals.
Furthermore, 28 per cent of the nation are dreading the festive season because of the financial pressure it puts on the family, according to a survey from Tesco Personal Finance.
The study also indicates that 22 per cent of people believe the financial burden Christmas brings will spoil some of the enjoyment of the season.
John Trotter, head of customer insight at Tesco Personal Finance, said: "It could be that as we move into autumn, the prospect of the colder winter weather and family tensions erupting over the Christmas period are contributing to the dip.
"While many people look forward to the end of the year, for others the festive season can be a source of stress."
Research from Deloitte released last month shows that people in the UK could be set to spend close to £17 billion over the Christmas party period.
