Christmas spending 'up 35% on 2005'
06/11/2006

Christmas 2006 credit card spending is expected to increase by 35 per cent on last year, according to new research.

The average Briton is predicted to spend £1,270 on their plastic between October and December 2006, the Morgan Stanley Card Index suggests.

However, as the Christmas party season approaches, consumers are finding ways in which to manage their spending sensibly, the card company states.

Patrick Muir, marketing director at the Morgan Stanley Credit Card, remarked: "The findings of our research are the first to give an impression of an increase in confidence for Christmas 2006 – a time when credit card spending traditionally rises.

"With repayment figures steadily increasing, this is a good sign for both consumers and retailers alike."

Whether it is for larger Christmas gifts or everyday items such as groceries, people are becoming more "comfortable" with using credit cards, Mr Muir added.

According to David Head from United Biscuits, one area in which consumers tend to spend more money during the Christmas period is on snacks, as they prepare for the party season.
