Debit card spending is outweighing credit card expenditure in the run-up to the Christmas party season, according to payments association Apacs.
During December 2006, Apacs predicts that debit card spending will reach £20.4 billion - £9 billion more than credit card spending.
A portion of this expenditure could be put towards Christmas party presents and fancy dress items, as consumers prepare for the festive period.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, said: "Overall our penchant for plastic continues and it looks as though this Christmas our plastic cards will continue to replace cash and cheques for our festive purchases.
"It appears that this Christmas is no exception, with the majority of spending being done by debit rather than credit cards."
However, credit card spending is more popular than debit card spending regarding internet purchases, Ms Quinn added, which could include payments for Christmas party attire and presents.
Hitwise UK, an internet trend tracker, announced in September that retailers will experience an eight per cent increase in online visits this Christmas, compared to the festive period in 2005.
