Christmas has come early for an airforcewoman from Cumbria, whose friends and family threw her a festive celebration in place of the Christmas she will be spending in Afghanistan this year.
Senior aircraftswoman, Lindsay Scott, who is based in Hampshire, is due to be deployed to Afghanistan on October 28, where she will remain until January. Those closest to her did not want her to miss out on the family Christmas celebrations, however, so they just moved them forward a little – to last week.
Her mum, Cath Kirkpatrick, of Meadow Road, Mirehouse, said her daughter was completely unaware of the plans.
"We’ve been planning it for a couple of weeks now; there was a good turnout and everyone enjoyed the night," she said. "Lindsay has been here visiting for a week and on Saturday night we just said we were going to The Stump for a drink, where we are regulars anyway, so Lindsay didn’t think anything was out of the ordinary."
The deployment will be Lindsay’s second tour of duty and she will be based in Britain’s main military base, Camp Bastion – to the relief of everyone, as her previous posting had been to the far more dangerous Kandahar region.
