Chinese government holds new year party
20/12/2006

The Chinese foreign minister Li Zhaoxing addressed the crowd at a new year party held by his department for the benefit of United Nations (UN) officials.

A party was held to mark the end of the current year and also to show the Chinese Foreign Ministry's support for the multilateral system, Xinhua reports.

While people in the UK begin to finalise their New Year's Eve preparations, the foreign minister indicated how China acts in strict compliance with the UN Charter.

He highlighted how the country will work with other international agencies and organisations in order to maintain peace and stability in the world.

The assistant foreign minister Cui Tiankai was also present at the party, as were around 200 other guests.

US it-girl Nicole Ritchie also announced this week that she will not be hosting a New Year's Eve party in Las Vegas following her recent arrest in California.
