Next week Woolworths is set to unveil its own champagne in time for the Christmas party season. Retailers say it will be on the market for as little as £5 for a bottle. The champagne will go on sale at 15 big out-of-town stores which are licensed to sell alcohol.
Tesco and Asda are two other high street stores which offer Christmas party champagne. Their brands run around £10 for a bottle.
Guardian’s wine writer Victoria Moore is not a big fan of the new product. She says: “An almost still champagne? It’s certainly novel but what’s left is a claggy, sweet-sour wine that reminds me of the old glasses you find the morning after a dinner party.”
This cheap champagne, marketed for a large Christmas party on a budget is manufactured by a relatively small producer, Henry Villious, who is based in Epernay, in the Campagne-Ardenne region and supplied by Park Lane Champagne in East Grinstead, East Sussex.
Woolworths says it is stocking thousands of bottles but the company expects the product to quickly leave the shelves in time for Christmas parties. Initially the company will only sell one bottle per customer.
