Some 65 per cent of Britons will be inviting their friends over for Christmas and new year, new research states.
Consequently, the festive period is not just about preparing for Santa Claus, according to Alliance & Leicester.
Consumers are conducting a number of improvements to their homes, including painting, decorating and investing in new crockery, the bank suggests.
Around five million homes will get a lick of paint in preparation for the new year celebrations, the research indicates.
Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said: "Christmas is a time for friends, family and general socialising, and we want our homes to look the best when entertaining guests.
"People want to feel house-proud and are putting in the time and effort to achieve house perfection."
Preparing the house is a good way of beginning 2007, Mr Leonard added.
2006 New Year's Eve revellers in London will be able to access free transport from 23:45 GMT on December 31st.
