Scottish & Newcastle UK reports the poor summer weather took a toll on the amount of beer sold in the UK. But with suppliers looking to make a profit on alcohol in late 2007, Christmas party hosts could get a good deal.
Beer sales were down by more than 5% during the first half of the year and the market was down 17% in June. Operators blame low sales number on the high amount of rainfall over the summer.
Jon Whittle, who heads up Budvar’s UK take-home division believes Christmas party case deals will be the hottest money maker in the weeks before Christmas and offers could be as low as 4 cases for £25.
In an interview with Checkout publication Mr. Whittle said: “Retailers will look to creative ways to maximize profits and the general Christmas party mayhem will run for months not weeks. The trade needs to be positive. The summer volume losses are only short term and must not lead to a Christmas price war.”
Cider makers such as Magnum’s are hoping for a high selling Christmas season and will be selling products at lower prices to entice Christmas party hosts to spend more money on cider.
